How Mealtime Insulin May Help

Mealtime insulin may give you the extra help you need to control blood sugar spikes that happen when you eat. And controlling your blood sugar at mealtime can help lower your A1C

NovoLog® Mealtime Insulin

In fact, NovoLog® (insulin aspart injection) 100 U/mL mealtime insulin is proven to help control high blood sugar in people with diabetes when taken with a long-acting insulin. At mealtime, NovoLog® closely mimics the way your body releases insulin when you eat. NovoLog® is a fast-acting analog insulin—a more recent type of insulin—that works quickly to help control blood sugar at mealtime. You will need to eat a meal within 5 to 10 minutes after taking NovoLog®

Controlling your blood sugar when you eat is important. Blood sugar reaches its peak 1 to 2 hours after you eat and can still be high for at least 4 hours (and up to 6 hours) after a meal.

This might not sound like a lot. But, if you eat 3 meals a day, you can spend up to 12 hours, or 50% of your day, with higher-than-normal blood sugar due to mealtime blood sugar spikes.

Remember that your A1C is affected by both your PPG (postprandial plasma glucose, meaning your blood sugar level 1 to 2 hours after you eat) and your FPG (fasting plasma glucose, like your blood sugar reading in the morning before you have eaten). NovoLog® can help control blood sugar spikes when you eat, which may help you reach your A1C goal. When taken with long-acting insulin, 50% to 70% of your daily insulin may eventually be NovoLog®

If you have type 2 diabetes, remember, adding mealtime insulin doesn’t mean you did anything wrong in your diabetes care; it just means that you now need another medicine to help get to your A1C goal. So, if you are taking long-acting insulin and your A1C is not where it should be, ask your health care provider about whether NovoLog® may be right for you.
