Fitting Insulin Injections Into Your Routine

For millions of people with diabetes, injecting insulin is a part of diabetes care. It’s a major part of keeping your blood sugar under control. In time, you’ll find that it can become a part of your everyday life.

Choose the injection option that fits you best

The 3 most common ways of taking an injectable diabetes medication like NovoLog® are by vial and syringe, insulin pump, or a pen device. Find out more about these options at Cornerstones4Care®. Read about how each option works. Then, talk with your health care provider about which one may be right for you.

NovoLog® FlexPen® and NovoPen Echo® are 2 prefilled insulin pens that can be used to take NovoLog®

Remembering to take your insulin

Because NovoLog® is a mealtime insulin, you take it 5 to 10 minutes before you eat. To help you remember to take your NovoLog®, you may want to set an alarm on your cell phone to go off at breakfast, lunch, and dinnertime. Or you can leave notes on your refrigerator, microwave, lunch bag, desk, or anywhere else you're sure to look.

Take NovoLog® with you

Be sure to bring NovoLog® with you when you're dining out at a restaurant or eating over at a friend's house. To help you remember to take it, connect your NovoLog® with something you know you’ll bring with you. For instance, every time you reach for your keys, or your cell phone, reach for your NovoLog® too.

If you decide to go on a vacation or trip, it's important you bring all your diabetes supplies with you. Include your blood sugar meter, your needles, and your NovoLog®. If you’re taking NovoLog® with FlexPen®, you may be able to take NovoLog® FlexPen® with you without having to carry a cooler. If you are flying, make sure to put your diabetes supplies in your carry-on bag in case something happens to your checked luggage.

Once in use, NovoLog® FlexPen® lasts 28 days without refrigeration, at room temperature (below 86°F). But NovoLog® FlexPen® does need to be refrigerated before you open it. You may want to keep track of when you start using a new pen by marking the date on your calendar. Learn more about how to store NovoLog® by clicking here.
