1. What is NovoLog®?

NovoLog® is your trusted rapid-acting human insulin analog from Novo Nordisk—a world leader in diabetes care. It is absorbed quickly and starts working within minutes to lower your blood glucose. This way, you may take your insulin and eat within 10 minutes, unlike the 30-minute wait required with regular human insulin (Please see important safety information).

2. What is a rapid-acting human insulin analog?

A rapid-acting human insulin analog is a modified form of human insulin. Scientists have slightly changed a single amino acid in the molecular structure. This helps the rapid-acting human insulin analog absorb more quickly into the bloodstream. As a result, it starts working within minutes, allowing you to take your insulin and eat right away. Rapid-acting human insulin analogs are also considered to act similar to the way insulin is released after meals in people without diabetes, which is a significant goal of insulin therapy.

3. What are the benefits of rapid-acting human insulin analogs?

  • Improved glucose control after meals
  • Flexible dosing schedule
  • No increased risk of hypoglycemia
  • Easy switch, often with no dosage change
  • Can be mixed with other insulin

Check out the about rapid acting human insulin (living/works.asp) section for additional information about these benefits.

4. How does NovoLog® work?

NovoLog® is a rapid-acting human insulin analog. In its modified molecular structure, a single amino acid has been changed to help prevent the molecules from clumping together. This helps NovoLog® enter the bloodstream more quickly and begin working within minutes—just like the body's own insulin release after eating.

5. What are some of the benefits of NovoLog®?

  • Works fast, so you may dose and eat within 5 to 10 minutes
  • Flexible dosing schedule allows you to adjust your insulin according to any changes in your schedule or eating habits
  • Performs similar to the body's own insulin release after eating
  • Available in insulin delivery systems that are designed to make dosing easy

6. Can NovoLog® be mixed with other insulin?

Yes. You should talk to your healthcare professional about using NovoLog® with another type of insulin. Any change in treatment therapy should be made cautiously and only under medical supervision.

7. Can I take NovoLog® if I'm taking other medications?

Yes. But, as with all insulin, several substances may affect the way NovoLog® works. Some of these medications may increase your risk of hypoglycemia, while others may cause hyperglycemia. As a result, your healthcare professional may need to adjust your insulin dose. In addition, you may need to monitor your blood glucose levels particularly closely. It's very important to talk to your healthcare professional about any medications you are taking.

8. Are there any side effects that I can expect when using NovoLog®?

The safety of NovoLog® in patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes has been evaluated in several clinical studies. When NovoLog® was compared with regular human insulin, there was no difference in the frequency of adverse events between the 2 treatments. Side effects commonly associated with human insulin therapy include allergic reactions, injection site irritation and rashes, and hypoglycemia.*

*As with other types of insulin, patients may experience redness, swelling, or itching at the site of injection. These minor reactions usually resolve in a few days to a few weeks. Less common, but potentially more serious, is generalized allergy to insulin, which may cause rash (pruritus) over the whole body, shortness of breath, wheezing, reduction in blood pressure, rapid pulse, or sweating. Severe cases of generalized allergy, including anaphylactic reaction, may be life-threatening.

†Needles may require a prescription in some states.
